Auto digitising is a very inferior way of producing embroidery designs. One would
think that the program creators would have solved this but they have not yet. It
is useful for someone who already knows how to digitize as a large amount of adjusting
is often needed to fix the auto design.
Digitising is a skill that needs to be learned and sadly many people make the mistake
of thinking that they can buy a digitizing program and use the auto programs to create
fast designs for sale on the web. A great number of those people have virtually no
experience in digitising and do not know the principals behind it and the many things
that need to be considered when creating a design. All they can see is a business
opportunity.
To my horror I have found out that there are many people who digitize and sell designs
when they do not even have a machine to test sew with!! Nor have they stitched an
embroidery design on any machine ever and know nothing about backing and pull compensation
or even about embroidery. Most of these people sell their designs very cheaply. Buying
such designs because they are cheap ends up being very costly because a large amount
of them will sew out very badly and you may often waste a lot of fabric. There are
also many people who do the same thing with manual digitising both of them think
that what they see on the screen is what will sew out but this is not the case.
Manual digitising is far better. There is a lot to learn about embroidery and digitising
but if you learn manual digitising you will have so much more control over your designs
and you will not have to do so much adjusting and editing as you do when using auto
programs.
if you are serious about digitising and you are concerned with quality and not just
making a quick buck, it is a highly satisfying skill to learn.
Someone who digitises manually will plan every step of the design to ensure quality
whether it is a small quick design or a highly detailed one. They will also have
a knowledge of the actual embroidery stitching side because if you do not know embroidery
and the way designs and stitch out then you certainly should not be digitising for
sale as they both go hand in hand.
If you want to learn to digitise I highly recommend John Deers Book which is Available
in my Amazon Affilliate Store Both in the UK and the US. John Deer is an expert
digitiser and learned from childhood on the original old machines. This book gets
to the point of all the many questions that do not seem to be answered anywhere else.
The cost of Embroidery designs on cards are very expensive and have copyright policies
that do not allow you to use the designs on products for sale. Very good digitisers
charge high prices because they work very hard and long hours producing quality designs
for you instead of mass producing inferior designs cheaply. Always choose sites that
state that their designs are manually digitised and most importantly TEST SEWN as
they will sell good quality designs. Bear in mind that embroidery is not a cheap
hobby and quality designs will be costly but cheap designs in the end are far more
costly. I had my fair share of bad experiences with my journey through the maize
of embroidery designs and eventually decided to learn how to digitise myself. A large
amount of time and effort goes into digitising and it is hard work.
Nevertheless always test your design on a scrap piece of fabric first before sewing
onto a garment no matter where you get it from. If possible use the same type of
fabric as the item you intend to sew on because different fabrics can have different
results.
